SEM-1 cells were isolated by biopsy from the extragonadal seminoma of a male human diagnosed with mediastinal seminoma. The cell line contains Sal-like protein 4 (SALL-4), activator protein-2γ (AP-2γ), and cytokeratin CAM5.2. Stem cell markers such as octamer-binding transcription factor 3/4, NANOG, c-KIT, SOX17, and SOX2 are also expressed heterogeneously by the cell line. It also has a hypotriploid chromosome number. The SEM-1 cell line is a model that may be used to study extragonadal germ cell tumors.
