Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate Receptor Encephalitis (ANRE) is a life threatening autoimmune disease where the body makes antibodies that bind to NMDA receptors (NMDAR) in the brain. This disease manifests as a variety of neurological symptoms including seizures/hallucinations/loss of motor function. The hippocampus and amygdala are the most affected centres of the brain. When anti-NMDAR antibodies bind to NMDA receptors there is a decrease in synaptic currents in the affected neurons. The Stable 293T-ATD cell line expressing NMDAR has been used extensively to uncover the molecular mechanisms that cause ANRE. This cell line would be ideal for research into NMDAR channel function and anti-NMDA antibodies associated with ANRE pathogenesis.
